I recently attended a Light & Lenses photography workshop with Ray Alvarez at Momentum Studio DTO, and it completely re-centered the way I approach portrait work.
The experience was intentionally designed as a hands-on, immersive environment—something that’s often missing in traditional learning spaces. From professional studio lighting setups to pre-styled models, everything allowed us to focus on what really matters: creating.
One of the biggest takeaways for me was learning to shoot with intention, especially when working with my 85mm lens. The workshop emphasized not just technical settings, but the “why” behind each creative choice—how distance from your subject, flash positioning, and light modification all work together to shape the final portrait.
Ray didn’t just lecture—he demonstrated and guided us through real-world scenarios, offering immediate feedback as we rotated through two different portrait sets. That live direction made all the difference, turning theory into instinct.
Another highlight was seeing a modern editing workflow in action, using AI-powered tools for portrait retouching that enhance efficiency without sacrificing quality.
More than anything, this workshop reminded me how valuable it is to be in a space with other photographers who are equally passionate. That shared energy, combined with thoughtful instruction, creates growth you can actually feel in your work.
